Customer Need

A fiber optic cable manufacturer needed a way to test the functionality of fiber optic cable with an emmitting diode and recieving sensor diode at either end. The company needed two testing units that could be used in the production facility as well as in the field where cables were installed.

They originally used temporary units that were too big to bring to other sites and did not have circuit protections built in. It was not feasible for these units to be used at external sites. They wanted a permanent solution to the problem that could be used at the production facility and on site at installations.

Solution

CSC designed and fabricated an set of test units that could be operated at opposite ends of the fiber optic cable. These units consisted of one transmitter unit to power the emitting diode and another unit to power and recieve signal from the sensing diode.

The transmitter unit allowed the operator to power the emitting diode with a constant current that could be adjusted to test the emitter at different power outputs. The reciever unit connected to the sensing diode to provide power and read the signal from it when it was receiving from the emitting diode. These units were constructed as portable devices with overcurrent protection for the internal circuitry.
